backed up andrestored independently of the operating system.NetWare 5 includes the NWBACK32 and the NetWare Backup/Restoreutilities.Together, they allow you to use SMS to back up and restore datalocated on various targets, both workstations and NetWare servers.SMS also creates backup session log and error files that help youmanage the backup and restore process.6-38IG 6-76 This document Administration Instructor GuideDNS/DHCP OverviewIn the past, NetWare has only supported the NetWare Core ProtocolTM(NCPTM) natively over the IPXTM protocol. The IPX protocol requires verylittle user intervention to configure and administer. With the release of NetWare 5, NetWare adds native NCP support forthe TCP/IP protocol, eliminating the need to encapsulate. However, theoverhead required to configure and administer the TCP/IP protocol canbe very time-consuming.To alleviate the administration requirements of the TCP/IP protocol,NetWare 5 includes a product called Novell DNS/DHCP Services.Thisproduct integrates the Domain Name System (DNS) and Dynamic HostConfiguration Protocol (DHCP) into the NDS database.Integration of these services into NDS offers centralized administration, replication, and enterprise-wide management of Internet Protocol (IP)network addresses and hostnames. This section provides a brief overview of DHCP and DNS, and explainshow to install and configure these services on the NetWare platform.DNSDomain Name Services (DNS) is a distributed database system thatprovides hostname-to-IP address mapping for computers on aninternetwork.Internet Protocol (IP) requires every machine on thenetwork to have a unique IP address such as 137.65.1.79.Unlike computers, users identify things more easily by names than byaddresses.DNS was created to help users find other computers on thenetwork by name rather than by IP address.DNS services are offered to networks through a DNS server.Anycomputer on the Internet can use a DNS server to locate any othercomputer on the Internet.DNS is made up of two distinct components, the hierarchy and the nameservice. The DNS hierarchy specifies the structure, naming conventions, and delegation of authority used in the DNS service. The DNS nameservice provides the actual name-to-address mapping mechanism.7-2IG 7-4 This document should only be used by a Novell-certified instructor.Revision 1.0If you think
