.Figure 5.35 The Backup Job Information Dialog Box Finalizes the Creation ofa Backup JobNOTEAt a number of places, we mentioned the ability to schedule backupjobs. After entering one or more scheduled backup jobs, you shouldopen the Scheduled Tasks Explorer. You will see that these backup jobsare part of the Scheduled Tasks list.If you open the Properties dialog boxof one of these scheduled backup jobs, you will see that it calls the com-mand-line application ntbackup.exe.After all this information, you may wonder how you ever can control all this.In a way, we have been spinning loose ends that we are about to tie together.Remember that we mentioned at the beginning of the discussion on the Backupwww.syngress.com 189_XP_05.qxd 11/9/01 2:35 PM Page 276276 Chapter 5 " Working with System ToolsTool that the main reason you backup up is to be able to restore.Restoring meansgetting information back with a minimum loss of data. You can only do this ifyou regularly make backups. This is much easier to do if you schedule thesebackup jobs automatically.Using the Schedule Jobs Tab FunctionAs you open the Schedule Jobs tab, you are welcomed by a monthly calendar (seeFigure 5.36).When you take the calendar as your primary view, setting upbackup jobs become surprisingly easy.Take a closer look at Figure 5.36.You seeon every Monday through Friday an icon with a capital I. On the monitor, thiswill appear in green; in this book it will be light grey. The icon shows somethingresembling a disk unit and a tape unit united by a magic wand, representing theBackup Wizard. The Weekend days have the same icon, with a darker grey N,which will be blue on your monitor. The N stands for Normal backup and the I stands for Incremental backup. Not only does it look straightforward, but if you work with it you will seehow easy it is to manage. So what do you have to do? First of all, you need toknow what kind of backup you want to perform on what dates. In Figure 5.36,you have the Incremental backups on weekdays and Full backups on theweekend days.By combining the information that is provided under SchedulingTasks and the Backup Wizard, you can go ahead and create backup jobs:1.Select a date on the calendar and click Add Job to start the BackupWizard (Advanced). You can also double-click the day on the calendar, which does the same thing. You can add as many backup jobs on oneday as possible. As long as there is room on the calendar date, an icon isadded to that date.2.Point to a backup icon on the calendar and click it.This will open upthe Scheduled Job Options dialog box, which lets you change thescheduling properties, and it shows you the backup information on theBackup Details tab.Although you work from a calendar, the Task Scheduler manages the backupjobs. The calendar is a representation of the possible jobs on the calendar datesshown. In fact, the Task Scheduler will calculate the next scheduling time, afterthe current one becomes outdated. The calendar determines the backup jobsbased on the scheduling formula. This means that as you scroll through the cal-endar, for every new month the Backup Utility will check which of the availablebackup jobs would have a scheduling formula that is valid for that specific date.www.syngress.com 189_XP_05.qxd 11/9/01 2:35 PM Page 277Working with System Tools " Chapter 5 277You need to understand that a backup job is not scheduled separately for everyday, so there is no practical chance of running of out room on the calendar.Whatthis also means is that the backup jobs that are shown on the calendar somewherein the future are predictions based on the scheduling formula. As the formulachanges, these predictions change as well.Figure 5.36 The Schedule Jobs Tab Enables Calendar Controlled BackupSchedulingUsing the Backup Or Restore WizardAs mentioned in the beginning of the section Working with the Backup Tool ,we now return to the Backup Or Restore Wizard. We did not get further thanthe Welcome page, but now we will go through the remainder of the Backup OrRestore Wizard.1.If you are still in Advanced Mode, select Tools | Switch to Wizardmode to get back to where we left off.2.Click Next. This will bring you to the Backup Or Restore page.Bydefault Backup files and settings is selected. That is OK, because weonly want to discuss the backup part here.3.Click Next and the What To Back Up page shows. It asks you What doyou want to back up? and gives you four possibilities:www.syngress.com 189_XP_05 [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
